Century-Long Memory of Kandilli Observatory Is Digitized

A hackathon focusing on the 115 years of recently digitized climate graphs from the Meteorology Laboratory Climatology Station of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) was held on March 6–7, hosted by the Department of Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University.

Century-Long Memory of Kandilli Observatory Is Digitized

Analog meteorological charts recorded at Kandilli Observatory since 1911 have been digitized and converted into data. With the aim of integrating this dataset into modern research infrastructure and contributing to the production of new scientific results, a hackathon competition was organized within the scope of the project titled “Preservation of Meteorological Scientific Heritage: AI-Assisted Digitization of Meteorological Chart Records.”

A total of 45 students from four different universities, including Boğaziçi University, participated in the event. In the competition, which was organized in three categories (Digitization, Data Visualization, and Prediction), students had the opportunity to present their team projects in detail to juries of academic and technical experts.

As a result of the jury evaluation, the top three teams earned the right to present their projects at the workshop titled “Kandilli’s 115-Year Climate Memory,” to be held on March 27, 2026, at the KOERI Administration Building. It was also stated that, in order to support student development, the other two teams that did not place may also be granted the opportunity to present at the same workshop if they further develop their projects.
